What is it?Finger Print
Technology designed to identify a person by his or her physical or behavioral characteristics

Biometric System Components
Sensor: detects the characteristic being used for identification
Computer: reads and stores the information
Software: analyzes the characteristic, translates it into a graph or code and performs the actual comparisons

Biometrics in 3 steps
Enrollment: The first time you use a biometric system it records basic information about you
Storage: A program analyzes your trait and translates it into a code or graph. Some systems also record this data onto a smart card that you carry with you.
Comparison: It compares the trait you present to the information on file. Then, it either accepts or rejects that you are who you claim to be.

In what ways?
Behavioral

•Speaker Recognition
•Signature
•Keystroke
Physical

•Finger print
•Facial Recognition
•Hand Geometry
•Iris Scan
•Retinal Scan
•Vascular Patterns
What are the Advantages?
[Untitled]

1.Increases security
2.Reduces identity fraud
3.Eliminates problems with lost ID’s or forgotten passwords
4.Reduces password administration costs
5.Scalable control solution for facility and network access
What are the Disadvantages?
1.Physical parts can be damaged
2.A person’s voice may change due to an illness or age
3.Diabetics experience eye changes
4.May be an expensive solution
How do the different solutions work?
Signature Recognition
tablet Device:
–Touch sensitive tablet
•Examines:
–Pressure, speed, rhythm, sequence, and angle and direction of the pen
Speaker Recognition
spectrogram
•Device:
–Oscilloscope: Spectrogram data
•Examines:
–Pitch, tone, and shape of the spectrogram
Finger Print

how fingerprints are scanned
fingerprint scannerlaptop finger scan

•Devices:
–Optical scanner : CCD
–Capacitance Scanner
•Examines:
–Ridges, direction, color
–Spaces between the ridges or “finger valleys”
Facial Recognition
Face pointsface lines
Device: Camera
•Examines:
–Analyzes the characteristics of an individual’s face
•Facial structure
•Distances between the eyes, nose, or mouth
–Now used to identify potential threats and known terrorists.
Iris Scan
eyeball
•Device:
–CCD (charged coupled device) Digital Camera: creates high contrast images
•Examines:
–The center and edge of the pupil, edge of the iris, and eyelids and eyelashes
Vein Geometry
blue veinsblack veins
•Devices:
–Camera using infrared light
•Examines:
–Shape and location of vein structure
What are the Social and Ethical Impacts?
•Privacy and Anonymity VS. Security
•Now able to track down criminals
•Easy access to private information
•Prevents acts of fraud
•Increases security
