What are they?
Digital Radio is a new and improved version of the regular radio we all have in our homes, cars, etc, today. Digital Radio is also known as HD Radio because of the better quality of sound it produces. HD Radio functions like a normal radio would - with a central broadcaster that broadcasts the radio signal, except the key difference between HD radio and regular radio is that the signal is in digital form rather than analog. Because of it's digital form, HD radio has better quality of sound and the ability to split one station into what can be viewed as smaller stations or substations. That is, if a rock station were to be split into groups, it could split and make smaller stations separated by its band - such as Metallica, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, etc. Another key part that plays into HD radio having a better sound quality is the minimal amount of interference that HD radio has. With no interference, there is no fear that the radio's broadcasting may not be heard because something is blocking the signal from the broadcaster to the receiver. A new potential function of HD radio are the "all-digital" operations that can be used with HD Radio. For example, a user of HD radio could view a band's details when their song plays on the radio on their LCD radio screen. This could help the sales of the band and help the user become familiar with the band.

Digital Television is a higher quality of television. It is known as either Digital Television, DTV, or HDTV for high definition television. DTV differs from regular television in that it broadcasts its signal digitally rather than using the normal analog transmission. With a digital signal, both sound and picture quality are of higher standards than normal television. In addition, similar to HD radio, the channels can be split up into smaller specified channels. For example, Channel 8 can be split into 8.1 for news and 8.2 for weather, etc. Another thing that DTV offers is a new refreshing rate so that the transition between every frame of a broadcast is smooth. In addition, DTV has bigger proportions for the TV screen - that is, the television screen on an HDTV is wider, almost like a movie screen. An example is shown below.

Digital Radio
  • Digital Radio Receiver
In order to receive digital radio waves, any radio must have a digital radio receiver. Digital Radio cannot be heard otherwise. What the receiver does is receive the digital transmission and interpret the digital 0s and 1s into sound that can be heard. The digital radio receiver can receive both analog and digital transmission. This may be to make the transition between digital and analog smoother.

  • Digital Television Converter Box
A DTV converter box is necessary for any television set that is not DTV-ready. That is, in the United States, any TV that still has to use an antenna in order to catch a signal in order to watch TV. But, if a TV already receives cable or satellite service, a DTV converter box will not be necessary because they are already connected, wirelessly or with wires. What the DTV converter box does is convert the digital transmissions into analog, which is what the TV understands. DTV ready television sets can be expensive, which is why the converter box was made in order to facilitate the transition between analog and digital TV within the United States in addition to the $40 coupon people can use to purchase the converter box itself. The final cut off date for analog transmission within the United States is February 17, 2009.

Advantages
  • Better Quality
For both digital radio and digital television, quality is key in setting digital radio and television apart from the norm. Societal needs for a better quality of anything includes television.

  • Minimal Interference
With the transition to a digital age, any interference caused by obstructions or weather are set to a minimum because of the improvement of technology. Music can be listened to, or emergency messages can be easily spread without worry of others not getting the message.

With multiple channels and stations under one main channel/station, the amount of advertisement that can be played, heard, etc. is multiplied. The amount of advertisement would lead to more sales which is beneficial to both the advertiser and the radio station or television channel.
DisadvantagesDigital Radio and Television - The ITGS Wiki at BHS
  • Cost
Although the cost of a digital television converter is eased by the $40 coupon awarded by the government to anyone who applies for it, the cost of a digital radio receiver is not lessened. This is because digital radio is not mandatory; analog radio still seems to be of acceptable quality. Although digital radio offers a higher quality of sound, analog radio still seems to be the better option because it is free.
  • Alternative Options
Other options such as satellite radio or Internet radio cancel out the advantage of higher quality audio with HD Television. Similarly, Internet TV and the availability of television on phones through programs such as Verizon's V Cast or Sprint Power Vision. The competition in the field of radio and television could cancel out the overall effect of the high quality of both HD TV and radio.
Social/Ethical Issues
  • Equality of Access
As mentioned previously, the equality of access may not be equally distributed because of limiting factors such as money and more.Even with the $40 government distributed coupon, the more advanced DTV converter boxes may cost more. Some may not be able to afford that price, but may want higher access. The same goes for HD Radio - but without the $40 coupon. This makes access by those who cannot afford the Digital Radio Receiver.
