Definition:
  • A Network Switch is a type of switch that enables the extension of a connection to a router as well as a direct connection to the router. In making this exclusive connection, two nodes are connected - nodes being computersNetwork Hub.
Details:
  • Switches are used to connect specific computers in order to avoid interference.
    • Usually, computers are connected using a bus, pictured to the right. Computers connect in a straight backbone configuration with parts where computers are attached, or in a ring topology or configuration where the backbone is circular.A backbone refers to whatever connects the nodes together. An example of a backbone could be a wire.

    • These two pictures show the configuration in which computers can be put in order to share connectivity.
  • Network SwitchA network switch is used in place of a network hub. Network switches allow direct connections to the router, which maximizes the amount of bandwidth that can be used. A network hub, on the other hand, splits the bandwidth between the multiple connections it has between it, the nodes, and the router.
  • Switches allow for the avoidance of data collisions, overuse of bandwidth, and overall network congestion is avoided - all of which are problems that come with the use of a network hub.
